Center for Excellence in Conservation and Green Economy

Conservation is also an indicator that progress is being made toward achieving net-zero emissions. Conservation protects and preserves ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resources to abate excessive carbon emissions. Conservation aims to halt the loss of biodiversity, restore ecosystems, enhance the ability of clean and safe water resources, promote responsible land use, and sustainable resource management. Conservation seamlessly integrates with UI’s dedication to advancing key SDGs, including SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by preserving biodiversity and protecting ecosystems. This holistic approach underscores the urgent need to protect our natural world and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Indonesia’s faces compound challenges between achieving Indonesia’s climate target and their economic development target. Indonesia’s must adopt a comprehensive strategy to limit their emission growth while pursuing higher economic growth. Thus, the green economy strategies play important roles to minimize the trade-off among both targets. For instance, the green economic strategies can ensure that the transformation from fossil-based economy to renewable or low-carbon economy due to net zero efforts will have the minimal impact to all the economic agents. Therefore, the green economy research stream aims to produce and advocate research on green economic field that could give the government set of strategies and policies to ensure the transformation to low carbon economy is sustainable, resource efficient, and socially inclusive. The green economy has strong linkage with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
