What is net zero?

Net zero means cutting greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible by shifting fossil-based energy system to low-carbon energy system, with any remaining emissions re-absorbed from the atmosphere by oceans and forests for instance.

Net zero requires major transition in the energy sector. This involves a substantial reduction in fossil fuel use, widespread electrification, improved energy efficiency, and use renewable energy and low carbon fuels such as hydrogen, and, where necessary, carbon capture, utilization and storage. Forestry and land use (FOLU) can provide large-scale emissions reductions and store carbon dioxide.

About UI NZI

Road Map
UI NZI

Proposed UI Institute for Net Zero Initiative (UI NZI) aim to bring together researchers and amplify existing relevant research centers from across the Universitas Indonesia to accelerate interdisciplinary innovative solution for a net-zero world, elevating UI as a center of excellence and leadership on net zero transition.

Our aim is to pursue holistic and interdisciplinary research approach on net zero emissions, UI NZI integrated two priority sectors of Centre for Excellence in Energy Transition, and Center for Excellence in Conservation and Green Economy are chosen based on global climate priority action and UI academic strength and development focus. UI considers Conservation and Green Economy as an integral part of energy transition to achieve Paris Agreement targets, acknowledging the alignment efforts from both sectors is essential to address the complex problems of climate change and advancing SDGs.

Our mission is to offer an inter-universities collaboration framework in net zero transition providing access advanced research facilities, education, and services for industry and government.
